Beginning with the 2026–2027 soccer season, POSA will follow the updated age-group formation cycle adopted by US Youth Soccer under U.S. Soccer’s new registration policy.

The new cycle uses an August 1–July 31 cutoff instead of the current January 1–December 31 calendar-year system.

WHY IS THIS CHANGE BEING MADE?

The updated age-group cycle is intended to:

• Better align players with their school-grade peers
• Allow more children to play with friends and classmates
• Reduce situations in which players are separated from their peers during the transition to middle school or high school
• Support stronger social connections and team continuity
• Make it easier for new families to understand which division their child will join
• Help improve player participation and retention

We understand that some players will not be placed in the divisions their families previously expected. Some children may remain in their anticipated division, while others may shift based on their exact birthdate. POSA is implementing this change to remain aligned with the updated youth soccer structure.

U5–U6 DIVISION
• U5: Aug. 1, 2021–July 31, 2022
• U6: Aug. 1, 2020–July 31, 2021

U7–U8 DIVISION
• U7: Aug. 1, 2019–July 31, 2020
• U8: Aug. 1, 2018–July 31, 2019

U9–U10 DIVISION
• U9: Aug. 1, 2017–July 31, 2018
• U10: Aug. 1, 2016–July 31, 2017

U11–U12 DIVISION
• U11: Aug. 1, 2015–July 31, 2016
• U12: Aug. 1, 2014–July 31, 2015

U13–U14 DIVISION
• U13: Aug. 1, 2013–July 31, 2014
• U14: Aug. 1, 2012–July 31, 2013

The “U” means “under.” Although two age groups will play together within most POSA divisions, each player’s age group will be determined by their exact date of birth.

We recognize that changes affecting teammates and expected divisions can be difficult. Our goal is to communicate clearly and make the transition as smooth as possible for every POSA player and family.
